Many web developers will promise to make sure your website SEO friendly. However the fact that you have a SEO friendly website is not equivalent to that you have done SEO on your website and rank your website high in any keywords in the organic SERPs. SEO friendly website means your website is not in fringe of any search engine algorithms such as the use of static page URLs, no invisible text, no use of whole flash or image on your page, etc. Being SEO friendly alone will not rank you high on any organic web rankings if you have not done any SEO on your website. Adam Hartwig’s website scored highly on Awwwards with a score of 7.39 and accomplished being featured as site of the day. The website also was featured on TheFWA as SOTD. However, here are some SEO observations:

 

These websites received high scores from Awwwards, a well-known web design gallery. The data may seem a bit excessive but we really wanted to emphasize the trend in web design vs. the trend in SEO design. We analyzed over 20 websites but will only mention some in this article.

 

We determined which SEO agencies were at the top of their field by their ranking in their hometown. We determined which website design agencies were at the top of their field by examining website award sites. Websites that accomplished site of the day (SOTD) nominations on Awwwards were included.

 

Our motivation to do this research project was that we were redesigning our website and we wanted to accomplish both — a great and fresh design while keeping the website search engine optimized. Our specific goal was to create our new website while use parallax scrolling and SEO simultaneously while making the website responsive (responsive web design).

 

Web Design Agencies are great at making beautiful websites, but can they do SEO too? We analyzed award-winning website designs throughout the world to see how SEO friendly they were. We also compared these websites to leading SEO Agency websites to see how they were design wise. We noticed that most SEO agencies have great rankings, but poor designs and we noticed that web design agencies have beautiful websites but poor SEO.

The most egregious cross-crafting claims seem to come from web development/design firms. I’ve seen a rash of it lately, and it’s ticking me off, so I’m going to embark on the web-designer-disparaging rant that every SEO seems to indulge in at least once in their career.

 

So when some web designer comes along and says “I Build Search Engine Friendly Web Sites And Specialize in Usability and Graphic Design,” I say “You and what army, buddy?!” Because, honestly, each one of those separate elements is one person’s full time job.

 

Yet another friend of mine is a graphic designer. He spends about 60 hours a week (he’s insane) taking the vague, nebulous “I kinda like bricks. Can you create for me a background that’s sorta brick-like, but not TOO brick-like.” requests from crazy people and codifying that nonsense into awesome well thought-out, engaging designs for websites. AND he now leaves room for blocks of text in his designs ’cause I threatened his life if he didn’t.

 

My BF (best friend, or boyfriend? OR BOTH? You decide!) is a web developer. Full time. 40 hours a week (at least) of taking assets from a PR firm and converting them into working awesome websites that are perfect regardless of which browser you’re looking at.

 

Hi! I’m Christina. I’m an SEO. It’s what I do full-time for a living. You know why? Because it takes one person (me) at least 40 hours a week to do all that’s necessary for 5 or so clients. A well-planned and monitored migration shouldn’t permanently affect your traffic, but you should plan for a temporary dip. For that reason, it’s best to perform the migration during a slow part of the year, assuming that there is some seasonality to your site’s performance. A site migration during or shortly before the holidays is always a bad idea. While the goal should always be to avoid losing any traffic, it’s important to make sure that if you do lose traffic, you lose it when business is already slow.

 

Never do a site migration without first testing everything on a test server. Verify that the redirects work properly, and do all of the checks that follow in private before going public. Trying to do it all in one go without testing is bound to lead to errors, and if the mistakes are bad enough, they can set your site back by weeks.

 

Still, that is only the best-case scenario. The reality is that site migrations, in and of themselves, typically offer little to no SEO benefit and do not eliminate search engine penalties. (That is why SEOs often use site migrations as an opportunity to make SEO improvements, like streamlining the site structure, fixing broken links, consolidating redundant pages and making content improvements.)

 

A site migration will almost always result in a temporary loss of traffic — Google needs time to process the change and update its index accordingly. A carefully executed site migration can minimize traffic fluctuations, and in a best-case scenario, Google will ultimately treat the new site as if it were the original.

 

Changing your domain name or implementing HTTPS can be a great business move, but if you fail to consider how search engines will react to this move, you are almost certain to take a major hit in organic search traffic.
